What’s the point of it all?
“What’s the point?”
“We work, we make money, we consume, we die.”
“What does it all mean?”
Last month, I found myself saying these words out loud to a group of friends during our annual retreat in upstate New York. It’s something we do every December — a safe place to reflect on our work, our goals, and what we want for the future.
But this time, I wasn’t feeling the usual motivation or clarity. Instead, I was overwhelmed by a strange sense of nihilism. A feeling I hadn’t felt before.
And honestly, I’m still not feeling all that great as I write this.
Maybe it’s the fact that the LA wildfires destroyed the homes of family and friends. Or the close family member currently in the ICU with a terrible disease.
Or maybe it’s because it’s been exactly three years since I quit my job to “chase my dreams,” only to realize there’s no ultimate destination — just a never-ending (bumpy) road.
Yet, in the middle of all this, there are these moments.
Moments where I step outside my head.
Moments of pure gratitude for simply being alive.
Moments where money, possessions, or status feel irrelevant.
And in those moments, I begin to see what it’s all about.
I believe in a higher power. This world is too nuanced for God not to exist. And from what I’ve understood from different spiritual teachings, we were made in God’s image.
And if God created all that exists, doesn’t that make us creators too?
When I think back on the moments of pure joy last year — those rare times when anxiety and sadness seemed to disappear — they all had one thing in common: I was creating something that truly mattered to me.
Creating a video. Writing a blog post. Crafting this newsletter. Making a new recipe. Rearranging my furniture. Creating a new friendship.
It started to click: the purpose is to realize the higher power within you and create from that place.
To create what’s in your heart, led by faith.
To make something with love, even if it has no audience, no paycheck, no accolades.
To create because it’s simply what you were designed to do.
And then I had another realization: this is probably why I’ve always been drawn to marketing. Real marketers, at their core, are creators.
As Seth Godin would say, “we create change.”
We see the world differently — how people dream, how they decide, how they act. We create opportunities for people to become better versions of themselves, to realize the lives they want.
That’s it.
The meaning of it all is to cultivate a relationship with your higher power, to surrender yourself, and to create something true to you. When you create from that place of connection, you inspire others to do the same — to trust their own higher power and to step into their purpose as creators.
So, the next time I’m spiraling into another existential crisis, I’ll try to remember this:
Take a deep breath. Tap into the higher power. Create something today.
