Uncover hidden content ideas for free 🧠

Hey 👋

Welcome to all the new faces this week! :)

Generally how this goes is we give some sort of insight at the beginning of these emails and after that we get into all the good marketing content from the past week.

So what's the insight this week?

Keyword research.

Here us out.

Sure, keyword research tools like Ahrefs and Semrush are great. But did you know that you can do keyword research for free by just using Google's own tools?

Here's how to do it:

Step 1: Find a topic you want to go after. In the case of this example, we'll stick with "dj'ing" and resources for DJs.

Step 2: Open Google in an incognito or private browser and start typing out your main topic. In this case, we want to create a listicle about something related to DJ'ing. So we can type "best dj"

Once you have the root keyword, in this case "best dj," press the spacebar and you'll be presented with a ton of keyword ideas. You can get even more keyword ideas by typing each letter on your keyboard (after the root keyword) and seeing what Google's autocomplete shows (see GIF above).

Google's autocomplete shows what people are searching in real time. Traditional keyword research tools can take months to accurately show search volume. So using Google's autocomplete is a good way to uncover any trends and ideas that keyword research tools may have not picked up on yet.

Step 3: For the example above, we found the keyword "best dj websites." Now, before we go after this keyword, we want to double check that people are actually searching this. We can do this by inputting the keyword into a tool like Ahrefs or Semrush. Or, we can go to Google Trends.

As long as we see some action, it means people are searching it. In this case, this looks pretty good. Okay, one last thing.

Step 4: Just because we found a keyword using autocomplete and double checked with trends doesn't mean we'll actually rank well. Some keywords can be competitive. So next step is to take our keyword "best dj websites" and search it in Google in an incognito or private browser.

What we want to do here is see if there are any websites specifically optimizing around the keyword "best dj websites." If we don't see any then this can be a great opportunity for us to go after this keyword (regardless of how authoritative some of the sites on the first page may be).

In this case, we can see that not a single article on the first page for "best dj websites" is actually optimizing for "best dj websites." You can quickly figure this out by looking at each articles' URL slug. We can see "dj websites" and "dj blogs." But no "best dj websites."

Bingo! Great keyword to go after.

Now, if we did end up seeing a lot of articles on the first page optimizing around "best dj websites" we would have to take our keyword and input it into Ahrefs or Semrush and analyze the domain authority/rating of the sites on the first page. If we have a similar domain authority to the top ranking sites, we should go for this keyword. If all the sites have a way higher DR/DA than us, we probably shouldn't prioritize this keyword and keep rinsing and repeating this strategy (starting with the Google autocomplete) until we can uncover a gem like this "best dj websites" keyword.

Okay, that's it!
