😮 Marketing that impresses
Olá 👋
It’s been a while since I sent out a newsletter.
I haven’t felt like myself recently. Maybe it’s the weather (I tend to have low energy during Summer), maybe it’s the fact that most of my brain space has been occupied by the biggest project I’ve been secretly working on for the past couple months (I’ll share soon), or maybe it’s just a sign that a change is needed.
So I did what I normally do when I’m not feeling like myself — I change my environment.
I spent that past month roaming around Europe, looking for answers.
And giving myself the space to wander has allowed me to reconnect with the part of myself that feels the desire to create.
It also reminded me that allowing yourself to wander, with no real plans, is where the magical ideas start coming to you.
For example, it takes a lot of mental energy to come up with the intro part of this newsletter. It often takes a lot of work because it comes from my own experience as a marketer, and I don’t feel good about creating things I’m not genuinely excited to share.
I don’t create content for the sake of staying “consistent”. It’s never been the ethos of the Marketer Milk brand.
While battling these thoughts one night, I arrived at my Airbnb in Lagos, Portugal.
As I parked my car, I noticed someone breaking into the building next to my Airbnb with a knife (and this person actually got in).
Feeling a bit uneasy, I decided to still continue checking in because I was so tired.
Come to find out, the elevator was broken — making me climb 5 flights of stairs with a 50 pound (23 kilogram) suitcase.
The Airbnb smelled funny and did not look how the pictures had described it. Frustrated, I decided to take a shower to calm down.
The water pressure? Next to none. The rate at which the water in the shower drained? Next to none.
I normally have a great experience using Airbnb, but this was the worst one yet.
I decided to reach out to Airbnb support for the first time.
I explained the situation as it was, and the call lasted maybe 3 minutes max.
No further questions asked, Airbnb sent me a full refund.
I booked a hotel in Quarteira (amazing place with great people, I will definitely be back).
Airbnb then sent me an email to send them the receipt of the hotel I got (not booked on Airbnb) so they could pay 20% of it.
Surprised, my bad experience quickly turned into optimism.
Prior to arriving to this Airbnb, I was frustrated with the lack of motivation to create anything. And when I arrived, I was even more upset that the place I booked didn’t feel safe (and was not as described).
But now, I had 2 amazing things to be grateful for:
My money back and a comfortable place to stay that was partially paid for.
A reminder how marketing is a lot more powerful after you make the sale (and something to write about for this introduction).
Already impressed about the Airbnb customer support experience, I was even more shocked to see an email from them the next day asking for my address so they could send me a free care package:

It’s one thing to hear Brian Chesky (Co-Founder and CEO of Airbnb) talk about creating a 11-star customer experience.
But it’s another thing to actually experience it.
It’s an important reminder that your customers are your best marketers — so take care of them.
Not only did Airbnb keep a long-time customer (I just booked another stay coming up in 2 days), but they also just got free marketing by me talking about them.
It’s also another reminder that ideas come from experiencing life.
Forcing myself out of my too comfortable environment allowed me to have an experience that I will take with me forever. The way Airbnb treated me is the way I want all of my future customers to be treated.
So as you move through the rest of your week, look at how you’re treating your existing customers. And even more importantly, look at how you treat yourself.
Your creativity shines when you give yourself the space to live life.
