Building your marketing strategy for 2023 ๐Ÿš€

Hey ๐Ÿ‘‹

It's that time of year again...

It's cold (for us Northern Hemisphere folks).

Gloomy.

And also time to prepare for Q1 2023 and beyond. ๐Ÿซ

In all seriousness though, if you haven't already thought about your marketing plans for 2023, or you're in the process of it, the mental model we are about to talk about should help bring some clarity.

When thinking about your marketing strategy for next year, it's important to split it up into 3 pillars: Vision, Strategy, & Tactics.

Your vision is your "why." As Doug would say, "the vision answers the simple question 'why are we here?'"

Your strategy is your "what." You can think of this as your plan โ€” how you intend to move towards your vision.

And your tactics are your "how." This is how you are going to execute on your plan.

Here's an example of our own framework:

  • Vision: Help increase the number of successful, fulfilled marketers in the world.

  • Strategy: Curate content from the smartest people in marketing so others can learn from them.

  • Tactics: Create a feed on our website and a newsletter, and make ourself known by creating original content via SEO, social, etc. to attract an audience.

FWIW, this is just an example โ€” it's not 100% what we are focused on. But it should give you a clearer picture on how to approach your marketing strategy.

Generally, what happens is that a VP of Marketing (or someone at that level) will come up with the vision and work with marketing program leads/directors to create a strategy. The the marketing leads will then work with marketing managers (IC level) to come up with the tactics.

It's a very methodical and organized way to approach your marketing strategy and one you should definitely take some time to think deeply about if you haven't already.

If you want to learn more about this, there's a great article in the "growth & product" section of this newsletter that you should definitely check out!
