😮‍💨 Brand marketing is ____

Hi 👋

According to this episode of the Marketing Against The Grain podcast, the #1 marketing strategy for 2023 is brand marketing.

But what is brand marketing?

Is it about buyer personas, logos, fancy billboard ads?

And what separates the memorable brands from the not-so-memorable ones?

Us marketers have to remember that there are a lot of parallels between the marketing world and our relationships.

After all, marketing is about communication. And communication is in everything we do.

If you think about the people in your life that you love the most, chances are they love you too.

An authentic love is what creates a strong bond.

And that's not much different with brands. Memorable brands have an authentic love for their customers.

We've talked a lot about love before. And we're bringing it up again because it's very rare to come by in marketing these days.

When you love someone, you don't keep asking them for favors. You do things for them without expecting anything in return.

And many marketers ask for too much.

With all this AI stuff coming out it makes you question where the future of marketing is headed. More content, more growth, more user, more ads.

But how do you zig when others zag?

When others are focused on more more more, ask ask ask. How do you focus on give give give?

There's a saying in building product that goes, "build something people want." And in marketing, this can often be translated with the phrase, "listen to your customers."

But sometimes people don't know what they want yet. And as we mentioned before, sometimes customers don't say what they truly feel.

So how do you go about creating a brand that wins the hearts of consumers?

You do it by reminding yourself of this one sentence:

If you love someone, you want to make them happy.

In other words, if you love your customers, you want to make them happy. And happy customers leads to a strong brand over time.

So how do you show love in your marketing?

You take a little longer to write that blog post so you can make sure you leave no stone unturned for your readers.

You send customers a personalized thank you note.

You remove that fake countdown timer because you know it's a lie.

You give away all of your secrets for free.

You go work for a different company that produces a product you care deeply about.

It looks different in many ways.

For some companies, it can even be a simple email.

Athletic Greens did a great job of this by making their loyal customers feel valued. After a few months of subscribing to AG1, we got this email:

Athletic Greens gift email

Something special? Who doesn't love free gifts?

Ag1 email

"Keep an eye out for more member-only surprises coming your way."

That makes people feel valued. It makes them feel loved.

Make someone feel loved and they'll love you back.

It's simple.

Brand marketing is having a deep love for your customers.

So start showing it more in your marketing.
