Hey you 👋

Last week, we talked about the importance of search intent and how Google's goal is to end the user search journey as quickly as possible.

Keeping the theme of SEO, let's talk about keyword research.

There are a lot of ways to do it, and we included an informative Twitter thread about the topic in the SEO section of this newsletter.

But, what if you're a brand new site in a competitive niche? How do you find hidden gems that other "SEO pros" can't find?

Well, one way you can do it is to use the UGC platform strategy. UGC stands for user generated content. Some examples of UGC platforms include Quora, Medium, and YouTube. All of these platforms grow because other people are creating content on them.

Some UGC platforms, like Quora, grow solely because others create content and that content ends up ranking in Google.

Often, UGC content does not rank well. Mainly because there's a lot wrong with on-page SEO optimizations on these pages. But for some topics, they do rank on the first page of Google — giving you an opportunity to outrank them.

If you can uncover UGC content that ranks on Google, you can easily write a better piece of content about the same subject and outrank the UGC page.

We actually wrote a guide on how to do this type of keyword research (along with two other strategies), and how to write SEO optimized blog posts. You can view that here.

But if you want to quickly see how it's done, check this out:

Go to your keyword research tool of choice, ours is Ahrefs.

UGC keyword research strategy in Ahrefs

Go to 'Site Explorer' and type in a UGC website like quora.com (1). Then, click on 'Top pages' (2). And finally, type in a topic related to what you want to write about (3).

You'll now be able to uncover some hidden keywords, with a solid amount of search volume, to start writing about.

Again, this strategy works well because UGC content is not optimized well for search engines. So if you can write a blog post targeting the exact keywords, and do a better job at explaining the topic, there's a good chance you'll outrank the UGC page.

Okay, back to our regular scheduling of curated content.
